In the grand opening concert, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and Music Director Daniel Hope dedicate themselves to that work which stands out among musical depictions of nature like the highest mountain peak: Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, Pastoral. Masterfully, Beethoven here gives expression to this inner experience of nature without engaging in mere «tone painting», even if he imitates the nightingale, quail and cuckoo. Ralph Vaughan Williams, in turn, devoted himself to another songbird in his work The Lark Ascending, which became a veritable hymn of comfort in Britain after the First World War. The composer was inspired by a lark, hovering high above the earth and spreading its moving song for minutes on end – and transformed this into an equally moving, entranced violin solo.
