With its library and reading room, the Museum Society has a long history in Zurich's cultural life: Thomas Mann and Lenin came to visit, the Dadaists found refuge here and James Joyce wrote "Ulysses" here. The book collection has grown continuously since its founding in 1834 and houses many first editions and rarities. Belletristic works and travel and memoir literature from the nineteenth century, which are otherwise difficult to access, are abundantly available.
